Discovery Ended 2021 with 22 Million Subscribers

Discovery Inc. ended Q4 with 22 million paid streaming subscribers, according to the company’s quarterly earnings report released Thursday. That number includes Discovery+, which added 2 million subscribers for the quarter.

“2021 was by all measures an exceptional year for our company, in which we achieved significant operational, financial, and strategic objectives. We grew our global DTC paying subscribers to 22 million, a tailwind for our strong distribution revenue growth of 11%, while global advertising revenues grew 10% due to continued strength in our key markets and share gains,” Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a statement.

This will likely be the last quarterly earnings report from Discovery before a merger with WarnerMedia. The Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice did not challenge the merger, according to an SEC filing from Discovery earlier this month, giving the two companies the go ahead to continue with merger plans. The $43-billion deal was supposed to close halfway through 2022 but now has been moved up to Q2 according to information shared on AT&T’s most recent earnings call.
