DIRECTV’s Monthly Price Is Up 20% Since AT&T Purchased Time Warner

Depressed mature man holding paper and looking at it while sitting on the couch at homeWhen AT&T purchased Time Warner, it brushed off concerns that the merger would drive up the price of cable TV by reducing competition. Now AT&T has raised the price of DIRECTV by 20% since its merger with Time Warner according to the New York Post.

AT&T has been slowly raising the cost of DIRECTV in 2019 and at the start of 2020. Just recently we learned that AT&T would be raising the price of its packages by as much as $8 a month with sports fees going up by $2 a month in January 2020. That is on top of the price hikes that DIRECTV added in January 2019.

Once these most recent price hikes take effect in January 2020, DIRECTV prices have gone up $19.90 a month since January 1, 2019. Since the merger in the summer of 2018, DIRECTV’s price is up 20%.

AT&T has also seen a growing number of subscribers jumping ship from AT&T’s TV services. In the third quarter of 2019, AT&T lost over a million TV customers. AT&T says they believe that they can turn that around but so far there has been no evidence that the number of subscribers leaving AT&T’s TV services has slowed down.
