DIRECTV Is Raising The Price Of Its NFL Sunday Ticket

Are you a NFL fan and have been holding on to DIRECTV for the NFL Sunday Ticket? Get ready to pay more for the 2017–2018 season.

Yesterday AT&T, the parent company of DIRECTV, announced that there will be a 9.3% rate increase for preseason sales this year. (A huge jump compared to the 2.4% price hike from last year.) Now a year of NFL Sunday Ticket will cost $281.94 if you buy before September 9, 2017. In 2016 the preseason sale price was $257.94.

What does this have to do with cord cutters? Late last year looking at what subscribers would pay for a streaming version of the NFL Sunday Ticket. Rumor is AT&T is considering a standalone NFL Sunday Ticket service or bundling it with its new DIRECTV NOW streaming service.

In 2014 DIRECTV paid $1.5 billion for the rights to offer the NFL Sunday Ticket until 2022. Since then DIRECTV was sold to AT&T, and now AT&T wants to make more money off NFL Sunday Ticket.

This does not mean AT&T will offer an option for cord cutters, but rumor is the option is or was at least being considered.

As cord cutting continues to take its toll on services such as AT&T’s DIRECTV it is likely that it will start to look for ways to reach out to cord cutters. One of the last holdouts is likely to be the NFL Sunday Ticket. When you see that go online to all without limitation that is a sign that traditional pay TV is over.
