DIRECTV NOW Will Soon Add a Paid DVR Option & Pay-Per-View Events

Channel Surfing ManRecently DIRECTV NOW rolled out their DVR service with 20 hours of free DVR, but that was just the start. During the first quarter 2018 earnings call AT&T’s CEO John Stephens said that AT&T’s DIRECTV NOW 2.0 platform will soon add new monetization features including a cloud DVR and pay-per-view events.

So what are the new monetization features of the cloud DVR? Many are expecting DIRECTV NOW to offer an add-on likely to cost $5 to $10 a month for additional DVR storage. Others are speculating that DIRECTV NOW will soon offer a 100-hour DVR option.

Update: AT&T has confirmed that DIRECTV NOW will offer a 100 hour DVR option for $10 a month later this summer.

DIRECTV NOW seems to also be following in Sling TV’s steps by planning to offer pay-per-view events.

There are other ways DIRECTV NOW 2.0 can add more revenue such as the 4K DIRECTV NOW option that AT&T announced last year. During the announcement of DIRECTV NOW’s DVR service, AT&T said they planned to launch a 4K option for DIRECTV NOW. You can easily see AT&T charging extra for 4K because it costs more to stream 4K.

It is likely that what was released a few weeks ago was just the start of what AT&T is calling DIRECTV NOW 2.0. For now, it looks like the DVR and pay-per-view events will come out later this year. Other features like 4K are possible this year but not guaranteed.
