DIRECTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, YouTube TV, Etc. Saw a 108% Jump in Viewership in Early 2019

The big question of how popular streaming, especially live TV streaming, is has been hard to answer because many streaming services do not disclose their subscriber information. Now we get a look into the world of live TV streaming thanks to the research group Conviva’s first quarter 2019 State of the Streaming TV Industry report.

According to Conviva PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, YouTube TV, etc. saw a 108% jump in viewership over the same period in 2018. This growth is likely why we see even more companies like Vidgo and T-Mobile jumping into the world of live TV streaming.

“There’s no surprise that the streaming TV market is expanding significantly,” said Bill Demas, CEO of Conviva. “Maintaining a high-quality viewer experience tightly across content and advertising is increasingly important as streaming providers look to increase viewer engagement and monetization. The battle for streaming market share is a fast-growing pie and services must deliver an experience comparable to linear TV to fulfill viewer expectations.”

It was also announced that at the start of 2018 live TV streaming services totaled about 7 million subscribers. This is up from the 5 million subscribers reported in 2018. We are still far from having a complete picture since some companies like Philo and YouTube TV do not release subscriber numbers, but sources have put the number at about 7 million for all live TV streaming services.

This is good news for fans of live TV streaming services. As more Americans stream, it puts pressure on content owners to offer their content through live TV streaming services. Hopefully, this trend continues for those who enjoy live TV streaming services.
