DIRECTV NOW On Track to Be The Largest Live TV Streaming Service in The United States

Recently we got new subscriber numbers for the top two live TV streaming services in the United States and it looks like there is about to be a change in leadership. DIRECTV NOW according to the report added 342,000 subscribers during the 2nd quarter of 2018. During that same time, Sling TV added just 41,000 subscribers. Well, Sling TV still holds a substantial lead with over 2.3 million, but DIRECTV NOW is closing fast.

If these numbers continue DIRECTV NOW will surpass Sling TV in 2018 to become the largest live TV streaming services in the United States. So how is DIRECTV NOW seeing such strong growth? Right now AT&T is spending big on getting new subscribers. From deals on Apple TVs to 3 months of DIRECTV NOW for $10 AT&T is spending big hoping that once you subscribe, you will remain a subscriber long after the promo ends.

The question now is will this plan work in the long run for AT&T. Unlike with cable who uses promotional offers to lock you into a two-year contract there are no long-term contracts with cord cutting. It is very easy for cord cutters to leave service and move over to a new service. Only time will tell if this spend big now strategy by AT&T will pay off in a few years.
