DIRECTV NOW Nears Half a Million Subscribers

Family Watching Television Together Arguing Over RemoteWell it looks like AT&T has a hit on their hands with DIRECTV NOW. After just 7 months DIRECTV NOW has hit almost 500,000 subscribers. According to AT&T’s earnings statement, DIRECTV NOW’s growth is “helping offset traditional TV subscriber decline.” It’s helping, sure, but it’s not solving the problem.

In total DIRECTV NOW has 491,000 subscribers up from the 200,000 subscribers they had at the end of 2016. Yet it is not all good news even with the new DIRECTV NOW subscribers AT&T still lost 199,000 subscribers in the second quarter of 2017. That is for all their video platforms including DIRECTV and U-Verse TV.

In the second quarter of 2017, DIRECTV lost 156,000 subscribers and U-Verse lost 195,000 subscribers. DIRECTV NOW though added 152,000 subscribers during the second quarter of 2017.

To help keep DIRECTV NOW growing AT&T has announced several new improvements are on their way.  AT&T a few weeks ago announced that the Beta testing for their next-generation video platform begins this summer. AT&T will invite selected DIRECTV NOW customers to be a part of the beta program and among the first to experience cloud DVR and many of our other new features. AT&T also announced that additional features, including live TV pausing and parental controls, are slated for availability once the new platform exits beta testing later this year. Other features, such as user profiles, download and go, and 4K HDR are planned for 2018.

At this time AT&T has not said how the DIRECTV NOW customers will be picked for the beta. So keep an eye on your email address for a possible invite.
