DIRECTV NOW Is Reportedly Allowing Access to Out-of-Market Locals

Have you ever traveled and suddenly found your favorite live TV streaming service no longer has your locals? Historically most live TV streaming services remove locals when you travel outside of your home market. That has started to change as services like PlayStation Vue, Hulu, and YouTube TV now allow you to access the locals from the market you are currently located in when traveling.

Cord Cutters News has had several readers tell us the DIRECTV NOW beta app is allowing them to access their local ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC channels from the markets they are currently in even if it is not their home market. At first, we dismissed the reports but after multiple readers reported having access to locals on the road it now looks to be real.

When exactly this change happened we are not sure. We do know last year DIRECTV NOW did not let you take your local affiliates with you outside of your home market. Now it looks like that restriction has been lifted.

Could this be a short-term glitch? Sure. You would think this would be something that DIRECTV NOW would announce. Or it could be something they plan to announce when the beta app becomes the new official DIRECTV NOW app.

Now if you travel, the market you are in needs to have that local. For example, if you have NBC at home but the area you are in does not you will not have access to NBC.

Cord Cutters News has been unable to confirm if this works on streaming players. So far we can only confirm this is happening on mobile devices.
