DIRECTV NOW Improves Their DVR Recordings

Father curled up on the sofa with his two daughters. They are watching a movie with popcorn.Since launch, most channels on DIRECTV NOW only recorded in a downgraded 720p 30 FPS. Even if the channel was aired in 1080p with 60 FPS, DIRECTV NOW would only play back DVR recordings at 30 FPS.

DIRECTV NOW has quietly rolled out an update to their DVR and on select devices is now playing back recordings at 60 FPS.

What is FPS? Frames per second (FPS) tells you how many times the image on your screen is refreshed every second. The more frames, the smoother the image looks. For a scripted drama, 30 FPS will look great; however, for faster action, such as sports, 60 FPS makes the action look smoother on screen.

For sports fans, this makes DIRECTV NOW’s DVR a far better option. Now they can relive the games they missed as if they were live.

DIRECTV NOW is not the only service to recently improve their FPS. A few weeks ago, YouTube TV rolled out 60 FPS on all channels for select devices. Currently, YouTube TV supports 60 FPS on the Chromecast Ultra, Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, iOS, some Roku devices, and a few smart TVs.

As the market for live TV streaming services becomes more crowded look for services like DIRECTV NOW to use 60 FPS as a way to stand out from other services.
