DIRECTV NOW Adds a New Location Requirement to Help Fix Local Channel Errors

Channel Surfing ManHave you ever had a live TV streaming service show you locals from somewhere other than your area? Cord Cutters News has had this happen for years with PlayStation Vue because they would show us locals from about three hours away.

Typically, most streaming services use the IP address assigned to you by your internet service provider. That IP is typically located at least in the same town as you are. From time to time that IP can be from hours away and link back to the main office of your internet service provider. This has caused many services, including DIRECTV NOW, to offer the wrong locals because the ISP has the wrong location listed.

Now AT&T’s live TV streaming service DIRECTV NOW is working on addressing that issue by adding a new requirement to have access to the Apple TV GPS location, which is like how mobile phones use GPS to identify the market they are currently in.

For some, this means they are finally getting locals. For others, this means locals they once had are now gone and not replaced. If you don’t have locals on your Apple TV you should go and make sure you have location services turned on.

For now, AT&T has only rolled out this update to the Apple TV but watch for the update to come to more devices soon.
