Detroit TV Station Boots CW Off its Lineup Over Pay Dispute

WADL-TV, a television station that serves the Detroit market, said it is removing the CW Network due to a disagreement over payment.

CW programming such as FBoy Island and Penn & Teller: Fool Us will no longer air on the station. Instead, WADL will fill the programming time with My Network shows, since the station carried both affiliates.

The dispute stems from WADL’s planned $75 million sale to Mission Broadcasting, which is managed by Nexstar, which also owns the CW network. The deal is awaiting approval by the Federal Communications Commission, and WADL owner Kevin Adell said in a statement that he doesn’t believe it will be approved “anytime soon.”

As a result, he sought payment from Nexstar to carry the CW, and The Detroit News reported that he gave Nexstar Chairman Perry Sook a 10-day advance notice of his plans to do so.

WADL said that the delayed deal meant the overall deal needs to be adjusted.

A spokesman for Nexstar was not immediately available for comment.

WADL had been broadcasting CW shows since September 1, which marked a shift from the network’s move from WKBD-TV.
