DAZN, the “Netflix of Sports,” Is Expanding

Three happy young men watching football game and keeping arms raised while sitting on sofaDAZN is a sports streaming service with deals that include the NFL, the NHL, and the English Premier League. Based out of London, DAZN allows subscribers to buy access to premium sports such as the NFL in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Now it looks like DAZN is expanding into Canada, giving Canadians access to many American sports streamed online. This is all according to sources that told TheStar.com that the service was on its way.

“It’s no secret that DAZN has big ambitions for global expansion,” the company said in an email to The Star. “We’ll have more details to announce in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.”

“Obviously DAZN is trying to use premium content to drive subscription numbers and audience,” said Andrew Georgiou, chief executive officer of Lagardère Sports and Entertainment, one of the world’s largest sports agencies. “They are no different than other broadcasters in doing that.”

DAZN sells its premium sports service for about $11 to $15 a month depending on the country. There are no long-term contracts, making DAZN a great option for many cord cutters.

A service like DAZN coming to Canada could be a huge moment for Canadian cord cutters who are often left behind on some of the best new services.

Hopefully the service goes live before the start of the 2017 NFL and NHL seasons. Even more importantly hopefully it will come to the United States soon as it continues to roll out around the world.

For now, though cord cutting sports fans in the United States still need a live TV service like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, Hulu, or DIRECTV NOW.
