Cox Will Soon Charge Extra if You Don’t Want a Data Cap

Recently Cox has been rolling out data caps across the United States. These data caps put a 1TB or 2TB limit on your data. If you go over the limit you will be charged $10 for blocks of 50 GB over 1 TB.

Now DSLReports is reporting that Cox will start to charge $50 a month if you don’t want a data cap or $30 a month for an extra 500GB every month.

“An overwhelming majority of data is consumed by a very small percentage of internet users,” a memo to employees documenting the changes reads. “The new choices are great options for the small percentage of heavy users who routinely use 1TB+ per month and prefer a flat monthly rate, rather than purchasing additional data blocks.”

“In Cox markets with usage-based billing, the less than two percent of customers who exceed the amount of data included in their plan still have the option of paying $10 for each additional 50 GB of data when they need it,” the memo insists.

According to DSLReport these new options will go live sometime this week.

What to do if you do not want to pay more?

First, check out our guide on how to stay under your data cap. Next, shop around for other Internet services providers in your area. For example, if you have AT&T with a 1TB data cap, look at Toast.net. They resell DSL Internet with US customer support and no data cap.

Lastly wondering if you can stay under 1TB and be a cord cutter? We answer that question in a recent post HERE.
