Cox is Turning Your Home Internet into a Public Wi-Fi Unless You Stop Them

Do you use Cox Cable Internet for your home Internet? You will soon need to manually turn off a public hotspot mode or Cox will allow the public to access your home Internet.

Recently Cox started to contact customers to inform them that their home Internet routers will soon be updated to automatically allow other Cox Internet customers to access the Internet as a hotspot. Cox says they will soon offer an option to turn this off, but Cox did not supply any details on how to do this. For now, if you don’t want your home Internet to be turned into a public hotspot, you have to hope that Cox gives you details on how to do that before they turn on this new feature.

The good news is this only impacts you if you rent a Cox Panoramic Wifi Gateway. If you are using your own router you will not be impacted by this change.

This is not an exclusive Cox Internet issue. Other Internet companies turn customers’ Internet into public hotspots. They push this as a feature saying you get access to hotspot Internet if you let the public also access the Internet through your connection.

What do you think of Cox Internet’s plan? Would you allow others to use your home Internet? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
