Court TV Is Relaunching As a Free OTA TV Network on May 8th 2019

Back in December, it was announced that Katz Networks was relaunching the crime network Court TV. First launched back in 1991 the network was relaunched as truTV in 2007. Now we have an exact launch date of May 8th 2019 for Court TV’s return as a free over the air TV network. sadly we still do not know what markets will offer the new OTA TV channel.

“Court TV was a top-20 cable network and at the height of its popularity when the network was taken off the air in 2008,” said Jonathan Katz, CEO of Katz Networks. “Today, while consumer interest in the real-life drama of true-crime programming is at an all-time high, there is no dedicated daily court coverage on television. We expect the new Court TV to fill that void on cable, satellite, over-the-air and over-the-top.”

Recently Court TV started running ads to promote the new network and giving a behind the scenes look:

The new Court TV will launch in May with more than 50% of Americans being able to watch it for free with an antenna. Court TV will launch in over 40 markets for free over the air in New York; Los Angeles; Chicago; Philadelphia; Dallas-Fort Worth; Houston; Miami-Fort Lauderdale; Denver; St. Louis; Seattle-Tacoma, Washington; Sacramento; Tampa, Fla.; Detroit; Cleveland; Cincinnati; Las Vegas; Tulsa, Okla.; Green Bay; Tucson; Boston; Orlando; Wichita; San Antonio; Albuquerque, N. M. and Bakersfield to name a few.

Several original Court TV staff will be returning including lead anchor Vinnie Politan. John Alleva and Scott Tufts will also return as vice presidents and managing editors. Katz Networks also announced that Turner Broadcasting has agreed to give them the rights to the complete 100,000 hour Court TV library.

“Scripps and Katz look forward to re-establishing Court TV’s important legacy of providing Americans with transparency into the U.S. courts system and fulfilling our company mission of journalism and public service,” said Brian Lawlor, president of Local Media for Scripps. “We believe today’s TV audiences will be drawn to the network, leading to the same strong revenue growth and return on investment the other Katz networks have delivered.”
