Cord Cutting Expands into Canada

Cutting the cable connection to coax connector illustrating people cancelling cable TV serviceFor years cord cutting in Canada has lagged behind the explosive growth cord cutting has seen in the US. Now Canada cable and satellite providers are starting to feel the pinch.

Canadian cable TV and satellite providers are seeing their subscribers drop. In the 2017 fiscal year they saw a 1.9 percent drop in subscribers.

The United States has been leading the way in cord cutting for some time. The number of streaming services are much higher in the US, and the current cable TV landscape is far more susceptible to cord cutting.

Yet even with the large number of protections, Canadian cable companies have seen cord cutting slowly crossing the border into Canada. Recently it was announced that several new streaming services would be launching. One of the big ones is a standalone version of TSN, Canada’s ESPN. That means for most sports fans they will be able to easily access their sports even if they do not have cable TV.

As cord cutting expands worldwide it helps cord cutters everywhere. The growth of streaming helps push providers to offer new and better streaming options before they get left behind. Hopefully, this marks the start of cord cutting quickly growing in Canada.
