Cord Cutting Continues to Grow As 30 Million Americans Cut the Cord

Teenager girl with remote control laying down and watching tv eating popcorn. The number of cord cutters has always been hotly debated. Numbers have been as low as 15 million and as high as 35 million. Now a new study by Leichtman Research Group, Inc (LRG) puts the number closer to 30 million Americans.

LRG surveyed 1,152 US households to come up with this average. They found 78% of the United States still pays for a traditional pay-TV service. That number is down from 89% in 2008.

As of 2008, 11% of Americans would work out to 30 million Americans; however, that is a bit deceptive because in 2008 there were just over 304 million Americans. In 2018, there are almost 329 million Americans. 11% of Americans today works out to over 32 million Americans.

This lines up with other projections that say cord cutting will be between 30 and 35 million American households by the end of 2018.

The growth of cord cutting is great news for current cord cutters. As cord cutting grows more content companies look for ways to reach this new market by adding their content to current services or launching new ones. Look for this to continue as cord cutting grows.
