Most Cord Cutters Plan to Skip the Apple TV 4K in Favor of Roku & the Fire TV

Roku has for years dominated the streaming player market and now it looks like that trend will continue.

According to a new survey from Cord Cutters News of over 1,500 of our readers, it looks like Roku will once again dominate the cord cutting world.

According to our survey, about 70% of our readers use a Roku player to stream their content. The Fire TV is in second place with about 40%. Laptops and PCs represent 31%, smart TVs 24%, and the Apple TV 22%. (The survey asked readers what devices they use and allowed them to list multiple devices.)

What was even more shocking was Roku’s domination among cord cutters who plan to buy a streaming device this holiday season. According to our readers 17.7% plan to buy a Roku, 11.1% plan to buy a Fire TV, 7.9% plan to buy an Apple TV, 2.6% plan to buy an Nvidia Shield, 3% plan to buy some other streaming player, and 57.8% do not plan to buy any streaming player.

What is shocking about these numbers is the fact that the new Apple TV 4K is on the market but we only have rumors of a new Fire TV and no real information about any new Rokus. So according to our readers, they would rather buy an older player or wait for a possible new one from Roku or Amazon than buy the Apple TV 4K.

Now there is good news here because a few years ago our readers told us that only about 14% of them used an Apple TV. Now that number is 22%. So clearly Apple is seeing growth but it’s not the growth that Apple wants to see.

So what do you think of these numbers? Are you surprised or is it what you expected? Leave us a comment and let us know.
