Comcast Will Suspend Data Caps and Open Wifi Hotspots in Response to Coronavirus

Comcast Cable TruckFollowing the lead of many other internet providers, Comcast has announced their plan to suspend data caps and improving its existing plan for low income customers.

With this plan, shared in an announcement late Friday, Comcast will open the Xfinitiy WiFi network nationally for free, offer unlimited data for free, and has confirmed its committed to connection low income families.

Comcast, like many others has opted to “pause” its data plan, saying “With so many people working and educating from home, we want our customers to access the internet without thinking about data plans. While the vast majority of our customers do not come close to using 1TB of data in a month, we are pausing our data plans for 60 days giving all customers Unlimited data for no additional charge.”

Additionally, Comcast will not be assessing late fees or disconnecting service for this 60 day period.

Comcast is also opening up its mobile hotspots for anyone to use, including non-Xfinity internet subscribers. You can view the map of hotspot locations here.

Yesterday, the company shared that it will be making it easier for low income families to get access to basic internet. This plan expanded on the Internet Essentials announcement, saying “New customers will receive 60 days of complimentary Internet Essentials service, which is normally available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month. Additionally, for all new and existing Internet Essentials customers, the speed of the program’s Internet service was increased to 25 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream. That increase will go into effect for no additional fee and it will become the new base speed for the program going forward.”
