Comcast, one of the largest cable providers in the United States, has announced a significant change to its channel lineup that is likely to stir debate among subscribers. Starting August 12, 2025, Cartoon Network, the iconic channel known for its animated series such as Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls, and Teen Titans, will no longer be included in Comcast’s core cable TV packages. Instead, viewers who wish to continue watching the channel will need to subscribe to the More Sports & Entertainment Package, an add-on costing an additional $9.95 per month. This decision follows Comcast’s earlier move to shift Cartoon Network to its pricier Ultimate tier, marking a further departure from the channel’s long-standing presence in basic and mid-tier plans now its leaving all of its core TV packages.
Launched on October 1, 1992, Cartoon Network, a flagship property of Warner Bros. Discovery, revolutionized children’s television by offering a 24/7 platform dedicated to animated programming. Founded by Betty Cohen under the vision of Ted Turner, the network initially targeted children aged 6 to 12, blending action, comedy, and creativity with shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo. In 2001, Cartoon Network expanded its reach with the introduction of Adult Swim, a late-night block aimed at young adults aged 18 to 34, featuring mature animated and live-action content like Rick and Morty. The network’s innovative programming and cultural impact made it a household name, peaking at 100 million pay-TV households in 2011. Its early morning Cartoonito block, launched in 2021, caters to preschoolers, further diversifying its audience.
In recent years, Cartoon Network’s viewership has faced significant challenges as its core demographic increasingly turns to streaming services. As of November 2023, the channel was available in approximately 66 million pay-TV households, a sharp decline from its 2011 peak. The rise of platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s own Max has drawn younger audiences away from traditional cable, with children and teens preferring on-demand content over scheduled programming. This shift has been particularly pronounced among Cartoon Network’s target audience of 6- to 12-year-olds, who are gravitating toward streaming giants offering vast libraries of animated content. The closure of CartoonNetwork.com in August 2024, redirecting users to Max, underscored the network’s pivot to digital platforms amid declining cable viewership.
As cord-cutting accelerates and streaming services dominate, Comcast’s decision highlights the precarious position of traditional cable channels like Cartoon Network. The network’s content remains available on Max, but the shift to an add-on package may further alienate viewers already exploring streaming alternatives like Sling TV, which offers Cartoon Network for as low as $35 a month. Industry analysts suggest this could accelerate the decline of cable TV, with companies like Comcast, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery prioritizing streaming over linear networks. For now, Cartoon Network fans face a choice: pay the additional fee or seek out their favorite shows on streaming platforms, signaling a new chapter in the network’s storied history.
