Comcast Says Flex Shipments Have Passed 1 Million

tv on a tv standComcast says deployments of its Xfinity Flex media streamer have passed the 1 million mark since the device launched last year. The Flex is Comcast’s take on the type of streaming devices made popular by Roku, Amazon’s Fire TV line, and others, and the company has been offering them to its internet-only customers for free.

It’s a small, unassuming device that boasts specs like support for 4K and HDR content and access to Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, and more. Beyond that first free Flex, Xfinity customers can also purchase additional devices for their homes for a monthly rental fee of $5 each.

“Flex was designed to fit seamlessly into the lives of our Internet-only customers,” Dana Strong, president of Xfinity Consumer Services, said in a press release. “It combines access to the top streaming services and the ability to control your home’s Xfinity devices, all with a sleek, personalized interface driven by award-winning technology. We are thrilled our customers are quickly embracing this device on such a large scale.”

We’ve seen reports of cable and satellite companies losing pay TV subscribers in recent months, but analysts have pointed to efforts from Comcast and others to entice customers through other means, such as broadband access or streaming services. In Comcast’s case, subsidiary NBCUniversal is busy prepping for the launch of its Peacock streaming service and the company has reported more internet service signups in recent months to help offset losses in cable subscriptions. And with more than a million Flex streaming devices out in the wild now, it looks like Comcast’s efforts to keep cord cutters within its ecosystem may be paying off.

It remains to be seen how Comcast might further leverage the growing Flex user base for more revenue-generating options in the future, but we’ll certainly keep an eye out.
