Similar to how prepaid phone plans work, this new prepaid Internet service will allow you to go month to month.
To get the Xfinity Prepaid Internet you will need to buy a onetime $80 starter kit. In the kit you will get a modem (that you own; no modem rental fees) and everything to set up your service. From there you can sign up for 7 days of Internet service for $15 or 30 days of service for $45. If you have Sprint, you can get a $5 discount every month. (We also did not see anything about a data cap.)
This service is aimed at Americans who do not have a bank account and are unable to get traditional Xfinity Internet; however, this service is also great for anyone who wants Internet only without the contract. Or Americans who may have a second house where they don’t want to pay for Internet when they do not use it.
“This offering is all about providing customers a flexible and predictable service that can accommodate individual lifestyles and financial needs,” John Dixon, VP of consumer services group at Comcast, said in a statement. “Our prepaid service gives people more control over their monthly bills and lets families get easy Internet access for their home whenever they want it.”
There are a few catches. First you must live inside the Comcast footprint. If you live in a different market, you will not get the service. Also, sadly, the service is currently capped at 10 Mbps down. Hopefully as more Americans use the service it will continue to increase the speed. Similar to how prepaid cellphone services have slowly been offering more.
Still this is a great service for those who need or want it.
