Comcast is Reportedly Working On a Streaming Player to Compete With AT&T

Channel Surfing ManIt looks like Comcast is working on their own streaming player to compete with AT&T’s streaming player they are currently testing.

This new device is likely to be used for both Comcast internet only customers. This will allow internet only customers to access some apps like Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, and more. Yet it won’t give you access to all apps. According to the report apps like DIRECTV NOW and Sling TV won’t be available on the player. According to CNBC the new streaming player from Comcast will allow you to subscribe to their TV service.

This is very similar to Comcast’s X1 platform that already allows apps like Netflix on Comcast’s set-top boxes. Form the sounds of it this could be a stripped down version meant for streaming.

AT&T is also working on a device like this. This new device from AT&T is likely to be used for both DIRECTV NOW and a new DIRECTV streaming version AT&T announced last year. The device is an Android TV powered streaming player called Osprey. (AT&T is very likely to change the name before release.) It is very likely this will be the set-top box for the reported DIRECTV streaming version. According to reports AT&T wants to offer a streaming version of DIRECTV that will offer the same contracts and channels but without the dish on your house. (Removing the need to send a tech to your house or pay for an expensive satellite in space.) For now, they are likely using DIRECTV NOW to test it and will likely also offer it as an option for DIRECTV NOW customers.
