In an effort to compete with growing list of fiber Internet providers, Comcast has launched a DOCSIS 3.1 trial in Nashville, Tennessee. Under this test you can get a 1 gigabit option down for just $70 a month with unlimited data; however, there is a catch… You have to agree to a 3-year contract. If you want this deal without the 3-year contract, you can sign up for just $139.95 a month.
It is really no surprise that Comcast is testing a gigabit in Nashville because AT&T already offers a gigabit service and Google Fiber is building their network in Nashville right now.
“We’re delivering on our promise to make Nashville customers among the first in the world to enjoy this new Gigabit technology,” said Comcast Regional SVP Doug Guthrie, in a statement. “The capabilities of DOCSIS 3.1 are incredibly exciting, and we are proud to be the first to market with a Gigabit offering that runs over our existing cable infrastructure.”
Google Fiber in Nashville will also cost $70 a month with no data cap. Yet Comcast does have one way to stand out. If you really want something fast, Comcast is offering a 2-gigabit option called Gigabit Pro if money is no issue for you.
This is just one more sign of how competition changes everything. The addition of Google Fiber and similar services has forced companies, such as Comcast, to compete or be left behind.
