Comcast is Charging a $90 Installation Fee Even When No Installation is Needed

A young woman is sitting in her kitchen and is loking at her receipts at home while using a smart phoneWell, it looks like Comcast has a new way to make money. Charge as much as $90 in installation fee even if they don’t have to do anything.

Recently ArsTechnica did some research oComcast’sts installation fee and found that it varies wildly but if your area has a $60 or $90 installation fee you have to pay it even if you don’t need installations. Even if you purchase your own modem and install it yourself ArsTechnica says you still have to pay the $90 fee in some areas.

This all comes a week after we learned that legacy Time Warner Cable package that means you will be paying an extra $11.75 every month for every additional TV on top of your DVR box.

So if you have three extra TVs (family room, bedroom, kid’s room) you will be paying an extra $35.25 a month. Over a two-year contract that will add up to an extra $846 to be able to watch the TV you already pay for. If you switch over to a Spectrum TV plan you will see the monthly fee drop to $6.99 a month.

So as always if you see a deal that looks too good to be true for cable TV it probably is…

Update: Comcast just sent Cord Cutters News the following statement:

“For internet-only customers, we offer two options that do not require an in-home tech visit. A customer can use an Xfinity self-install kit with a modem leased from Comcast, or purchase his/her own modem. Orders can be completed online, in-person at an Xfinity retail store, or by phone. We’ve worked hard to make the self-install experience simple and easy and it’s a growing and popular way for new customers to connect. When the installation is more complex, we schedule a technician visit. There are reasons that an in-home technician visit may be necessary. For example, if our engineers need to test signal strength and connections in a home that hasn’t been serviced in a number of years, or if the installation is more complicated for products like Gigabit internet or there are multiple services (like home security) being installed. For these situations, we offer competitively-priced options, which vary by market. It’s important to note that we can’t offer self-install kits for residences that we already serve with an existing customer.”
