Back in 2016, Comcast raised their data cap to 1TB. At the time, the company told customer that this data allowance would allow for streaming 600 to 700 hours of HD video. Since then, Comcast has said that only a minority of customers were actually coming close to reaching that 1TB limit.
Now, with streaming becoming a more prevalent way of watching TV, streaming quality improving, and more families using multiple streaming services without the household, Comcast is now saying that “its median users are using 200GB of their 1TB data cap a month, thanks to streaming video,” according an article from The Verge.
According to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, “our customers’ demand for speed and data usage keeps increasing,” and that the “median usage for our [residential] business is over 200 gigabytes, and this is increasing at 34% year-over-year in the quarter.”
While that 200GB number may not sound excessive, it’s a big jump from the 60GB a month that the median customer was using at the time of the increase to a 1TB cap just a couple of years ago.
