Comcast has already dabbled in the streaming device market with its X1 and Flex hardware, but a new report suggests the cable giant might be looking to enter the smart TV market as well. Protocol, citing industry sources, reported this week that Comcast has been in talks with TV manufacturers and is exploring smart TVs as a major platform for the future.
The company would leverage its existing X1 platform, which also powers its Flex line of streaming devices. Cox also uses the X1 line for its own Contour streaming devices. But where Cox effectively puts its name on existing Comcast hardware and software, an X1-powered smart TV would likely require third-party manufacturing help — namely TV makers.
Of course, should Comcast officially enter the smart TV market, it’ll be competing with some established players, including Samsung, with its Tizen-based models, and LG’s webOS line. Meanwhile, TCL has several smart TV options powered by Android TV and Roku‘s software.
For now, however, Comcast has not made any official announcements regarding new hardware plans. We’ll continue to keep an eye on Comcast’s potential smart TV aspirations, and we’ll report back with any developments.
