CNN Aims for Balanced Political Coverage, Vows to Hold Trump Accountable Without Bias As it Struggles to Find a Audience Between Fox News & MSNBC

CNN’s chief executive, Mark Thompson, has outlined a new vision for the network’s political reporting, urging journalists to hold President Donald Trump’s administration accountable while avoiding partisan battles. In an interview with the Financial Times, the former New York Times and BBC leader emphasized that CNN’s role is not to “oppose political forces” but to cover them fairly and accurately, signaling a shift in tone as the network navigates a polarized media landscape as ut struggles to find its footing after ratings dropped hard after the 2024 election.

“We shouldn’t slip into the idea that part of our job is to fight political regimes,” Thompson told the FT. “Our job is to cover the political contest, rather than to head into the ring and start throwing punches ourselves.” The boxing metaphor was pointed, recalling a 2017 incident when Trump tweeted a video of himself pummeling a figure with CNN’s logo on its face, prompting headlines like “Trump punches CNN” from then-CNN reporter Brian Stelter. Thompson’s call for restraint aims to move past such clashes, focusing instead on “accurate, fair-minded” reporting that doesn’t shy away from scrutinizing power but steers clear of perceived bias.

The directive comes amid heightened tensions, with Trump’s administration facing criticism for restricting press access. Thompson voiced strong support for The Associated Press (AP), which was barred from an Oval Office news conference on April 14, 2025, despite a federal court order protecting AP after it refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” “The AP is a valuable partner,” Thompson said, endorsing collaborative efforts like the White House Correspondents’ Association to ensure robust coverage. CNN’s own history with Trump, including revoked press passes in 2018, underscores the stakes, yet Thompson insists on neutrality over confrontation.

This pivot reflects broader challenges for CNN, which saw its primetime viewership dip to 600,000 in 2024, per Nielsen, as streaming platforms gained ground. Adding to the issues CNN faces is a growing trend of Americans switching to YouTube for their news. Thompson’s strategy aligns with industry trends, as networks like CBS adjust post-election coverage to rebuild trust, per a 2024 Variety report. By prioritizing accountability over advocacy, CNN aims to regain viewers wary of agenda-driven news.

Thompson’s vision—coverage that’s tough but impartial—sets a high bar as the network trys to find its own voice between Fox News and MSNBC.
