Alicia Silverstone is set to return as the beloved Cher Horowitz in a new “Clueless” sequel series in development at Peacock, Variety has learned. The project marks a fresh chapter for the cult classic 1995 film, which was loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s “Emma.”
While plot details remain under wraps, the series will serve as a follow-up to the original movie, which skyrocketed Silverstone to fame and became a defining piece of ’90s pop culture. The show is penned by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for creating “Gossip Girl” and “The OC,” alongside Jordan Weiss, who recently wrote the screenplay for “Freakier Friday.” All three will executive produce, with Schwartz and Savage under their Fake Empire banner. Silverstone will also executive produce, joined by Amy Heckerling, the film’s original writer-director, and producer Robert Lawrence. CBS Studios and Universal Television are producing.
This series is distinct from a previously announced “Clueless” project at Peacock in 2020, which focused on Cher’s best friend, Dionne, in a mystery-driven storyline but did not move forward. The new series promises to revisit the bubbly, fashion-forward world of Cher Horowitz, though it’s unclear how it will expand on her story.
Silverstone, who last portrayed Cher in a 2023 Rakuten Super Bowl ad, has remained active in film and TV, with recent roles in “American Horror Stories” and upcoming projects like Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia” and Acorn TV’s “Irish Blood.” Her return to “Clueless” aligns with a wave of ’90s revivals, including Sarah Michelle Gellar’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” pilot at Hulu and a “Malcolm in the Middle” reunion at Disney+.
The original “Clueless” film featured a star-studded cast, including Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Donald Faison. It also spawned a TV adaptation that ran from 1996 to 1999, with Rachel Blanchard as Cher. Fans eagerly await how this new series will capture the charm and wit of the original.
