Charter is now teaming up with Samsung to begin testing its 5G Internet service. Its goal is to jump into the 5G home Internet market along with Google, AT&T, Verizon, and others.
“These tests will provide critical information as Charter prepares to launch a mobile wireless service next year and bring new competition to that marketplace,” Charter said in a company statement posted on its their blog.
It looks like Charter’s main goal is to focus on home Internet first and outside the home as a secondary market at least at launch.
“Charter will emphasize an ‘inside-out’ strategy, focusing first on wireless solutions inside the home and office, and then eventually expanding outdoors,” the company said in its statement.
“These trials and collaborating with partners like Samsung, demonstrate Charter’s commitment to continually innovate our network and power the communications needs of the future. The connectivity we will provide will allow self-driving cars to speak to one another and patients to receive medical care using augmented and virtual reality. It also will facilitate the interconnectivity of billions of devices and vastly speed up broadband in the home and office,” Charter said in a statement.
Many of these 5G services have said that they will start to roll out in 2018 with a goal of having half the United States covered in 5G by 2020. This new influx of home Internet compaction should help bring compaction to a market that has had almost none for years.
As we have seen with live TV streaming competition has a way of driving down cost and forcing companies to become more consumer friendly. Hopefully 5G will do just that for home Internet.
