Charter is Launching a $12 a Month Mobile Phone Service

It looks like Charter is following Comcast into the world of cell phone plans and they are not holding back. Yesterday BGR broke all the details about the new service that will include a $12 per month option for unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of data.

How it Works:

It looks like Charter is going to use their network of Wi-Fi networks and Verizon. If you are within reach of a Spectrum WiFi network your phone will auto connect. If you are outside the reach of a Spectrum Wi-Fi network your phone will connect to the Verizon network.

For The User Who Needs Unlimited Data:

If you want unlimited data Spectrum will offer a $45 a month unlimited data plan for 1 person or $90 a month for two lines with unlimited data, talk, and text. Compare that to $70 for T-Mobile, $75 for Verizon, or $65 for AT&T and you can see some real savings.

For Users Who Just Want Talk, Text, & a Little Data

If you don’t use a ton of data Spectrums $12 a month phone service maybe something to look at. For $12 a month you get unlimited talk and text along with 1 GB of data. After that, it is $12 for each additional GB used every month. Compare that to $35 for Verizon’s 2GB plan or $35 for AT&T’s 1 GB plan.

A Few Things You Need to Know:

You will need to be at least a Spectrum internet subscriber. Also, the BGR report did not list if you will be able to use your phones hotspot feature. Right now it is unclear if you will be able to bring your own phone or have to buy one from Spectrum.

Even with the limitations though for someone who is not a heavy phone user this could be a service to look into.
