CBS’s CEO Talks About Their New FREE Sports Streaming Service

Group of young people watching soccer matchA few months ago CBS announced plans to launch a free sports streaming service similar to its free CBS News service. Now we get some of our first hints at what it will look like.

“We think there’s a place in the marketplace for straight, factual clips, highlights, scores,” CBS’s CEO Leslie Moonves said. “I’m a big sports fan, and I’m turning on ESPN a lot, and I’m seeing people yelling at each other. I want to see whether the Dodgers or the Yankees won last night,” said Moonves.

Moonves went on to say that CBS has been negotiating rights to get highlights of many popular sports.

“When ESPN or Comcast announces it’s losing subs, that’s a good thing for CBS,” Moonves said. “These cord-cutters, they’re not disappearing, going into the woods and avoiding television. They’re just going to other services, and we’re going to be in all of them.”

There is a lot of truth in his statement. Traditional pay TV may be seeing a drop in viewership, but other services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have been seeing growth. The question now is will CBS’s free sports streaming service connect with cord cutters.

CBS has had great success with CBS News’s streaming service. Hopefully it can replicate its success with sports.
