CBS News Has One Million Daily Streams as Free Ad-Supported News Services Grow

Over the last 20 years, news has increasingly been put behind the paywall of cable TV. Now the news is once again becoming free, and for CBS it is paying off. Recently CBS announced that their free 24/7 news service CBS News is averaging one million daily streams. Now others have noticed the growth of CBS News.

This growth by CBS has seen others move quickly to also launch an ad-supported news service. Later this month, NBC News will be launching a free ad-supported news service. Local news has also moved heavily into free ad-supported streaming with the growth of apps like NewsON, STIRR, and Haystack offering local news.

Another national news service to launch recently include startups like NewsNet, a small TV network from northern Michigan that is currently investing in a new larger studio.

Free ad-supported news is the future of TV news. The question now is what does the growth of ad-supported news mean for traditional news networks like FOX, CNN, and MSNBC.
