This Sunday, May 4, the Catchy Comedy channel will have an all-day All in the Family marathon. Starting at 6 a.m. ET, the channel will air 48 episodes of the classic sitcom.
Ahead of the marathon, Catchy Comedy shared a 1978 interview from The Morning Call in which Jean Stapleton opened up about what it was like when Norman Lear, the show’s creator, left All in the Family after season eight. Originally, the show was set to end that year, but pressure from CBS kept it alive. Lear, however, decided it was time to shift his focus from television to film. Stapleton described his exit as a deep personal loss, calling him “the father” of the show. She recalled the final dress rehearsal with him, where many tears were shed, and Lear’s simple, heartfelt goodbye: “You’ve added many years to my life.”
With Lear gone, Stapleton kept herself grounded by remembering his early advice. He had once told her, “Edith is able to let Archie’s abuse roll off her back. She just tunes him out!” That one line became her anchor as she continued to play Edith during the show’s final season.
Edith wasn’t just a sidekick. She became a character who showed quiet strength, warmth, and compassion, even when others underestimated her. Stapleton remembered receiving letters from viewers criticizing the show for being “dirty” or for how she and Carroll O’Connor looked in their nightclothes. Her answer was simple and honest: “We’re real.”
Even after Norman Lear’s departure, All in the Family kept its edge and heart. The Bunkers became part of television history, tackling issues that many shows wouldn’t dare touch, all while making audiences laugh and think. Edith’s following became so strong, Stapleton joked, it could win elections.
