We often get asked if a live TV streaming can be used in a business setting. Services like Sling TV, Hulu, PlayStation Vue, DIRECTV NOW, and others are a great way to save money, but can you publicly air them in a restaurant or other business establishment? We did some digging and talked with several streaming services to find out.

Can you publicly air a live TV streaming service in a restaurant or other business establishment?

You can, but there may be legal issues. According to every streaming service we talked with, they do not include a license to stream in a restaurant. So, while Sling TV, Hulu, DIRECTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, and others will all work in your restaurant they do not include a license to publicly air the content. So, you could face a copyright issue for streaming NFL games, for example.

When you are in a public space where you want to air TV, especially sports, you need a special license. That is one of the main reasons business TV costs more because it often includes legal rights to air events in public places.

Several streaming services said they are working on a business version, but none of them are available at this time. So just be aware that live TV streaming services currently only offer a license for personal use not for public airing.
