A judge last week issued a court order requested by Cablevision to stop the importation and sale of the Roku devices, but Roku then won a suspension. Now a new court decision has overturned that suspension.
“Cablevision cannot allow the content that it licenses from domestic and foreign companies to be illegally used,” Cablevision spokeswoman Maria Eugenia Zurita told Reuters via email. “We would also like Roku Inc to better supervise the use of its software so that it’s not used inappropriately.”
Yet it seems that this is not over. “Today’s decision is not the final word in this complex legal matter, and it is not expected to prevent consumers from purchasing Roku products in Mexico at this time,” Kay said.
It seems Cablevision is upset over 3rd party Roku Channels that allow the streaming of pirated content on Roku players. They are not apps made by Roku and you will not find them in the Roku Channel Store, but these Roku Channels can be added to Roku players which seems to be the case Cablevision is bringing against Roku. According to the complaint sellers would use the messaging app WhatsApp to offer Roku owners illegal access to monthly packages of hundreds of television channels, including Televisa’s, HBO, ESPN and others.
Roku did tell Cord Cutters News that this will not affect devices that have already been sold in Mexico and they will continue to work. This order just blocks the sale of Roku players from this point forward.
