Cable TV Subscribers Pay on Average $10 For Every Channel They Actually Watch

Cable TVWe have all heard crazy predictions of how à la carte TV will drive up the cost of channels; however, have you ever thought about what you are really paying per channel with cable TV?

A recent study by Digitalsmiths, a Tivo-owned research company, showed that once again over 83% of pay-TV subscribers watch 10 or fewer channels; 44% of subscribers to pay-TV watch 5 or fewer channels.

With the average pay-TV bill now at $100 a month on average pay-TV subscribers are paying $10 a month per channel. For the price of just one channel on cable TV you can get a month’s worth of Netflix. Hulu is only $7.99 a month, and Amazon Prime Video is just $8.25 a month.

Not only are you paying $10 a month per channel with pay-TV, but you also are paying $10 a month for a channel that airs commercials and reruns 90% of the time. With some hour-long shows only being 40 minutes long and many stations airing infomercials all night, cable subscribers need to really ask themselves if they are getting what they are paying for.

The next time you talk to someone who still has cable TV ask them how many channels they watch on a monthly basis. When you break it out, cable TV is just a bad deal all the way around.
