Cable TV Could Lose 6.2 Million Subscribers in 2020 As Cord Cutting Continues to Grow, New Study Shows

Watching tv and using remote controlAs we’ve gotten the numbers from Quarter 3 reports, we’ve been seeing pay TV subscriber numbers drop across the board. Comcast, Spectrum, Verizon, and AT&T lost a combined 1.7 million subscribers just in the last quarter.

Now, analysts at UBS say that those losses will likely continue in 2020. The firm estimates another 6.2 million subscribers leaving pay TV during the year. That number would result in a 6.7% rate in decline, compared to a 6.2% rate of decline in 2019.

“We now expect industry losses to remain in the 6-7% per year range for the medium term, suggesting worsening trends in domestic core affiliate into next year,” said John Hodulik, an analyst for UBS.

When it comes to MVPD services, UBS expects to see rising numbers but no dramatic changes. It’s estimated that Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV has been gaining between 100,000 and 200,000 subscribers each quarter and UBS says those number will likely continue to stay constant in 2020. They also note that smaller services will likely struggle with finding the budget needed to survive in the competitive industry.
