33% of Cable Subscribers Would Consider Cancelling if NFL Season is Postponed

While we’ve known for some time that cable subscriber numbers are dropping with the rise of cord cutting, but one report is showing that the drop could be even more significant if sports don’t come back soon.

Kill the Cable Bill conducted a survey with Mindnet Analytics to ask current cable customers how the lack of sports is impacting their current subscription and future plans. They found that 33% of cable subscribers say they would consider cancelling their cable contracts if the football season is postponed.

Of those surveyed, 66% said that live sports are a “significant” reason for subscribing to cable. 33% said “very significant.”

44% of respondents said the current lack of live sports could impact whether they keep their cable subscription. 33% then said that they are either “somewhat likely” or “likely” to cancel cable if the 2019-2020 NFL season is postponed.

We won’t know for sure just how many cable subscribers will drop their service until the NFL season starts up or gets postponed. In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye on subscribers surveys like this and official numbers as they come in, to see the impact that sports and coronavirus are making on the cable industry.
