Cable Companies Are Trying to Hide the Growth of Cord Cutting

cutCord cutting has been growing month after month and is clearly scaring cable TV providers. Scaring them so much that they are moving to hide the true number of subscribers that are dropping the service.

How are cable companies hiding the number of cancelations? According to DSL Reports cable companies have started to count streaming subscribers as traditional cable subscribers.

Comcast is the most recent company to join this movement. Recently, without much press, Comcast started counting subscribers to their new “streaming” service as part of their video customers, hiding the real number of people who are dropping the traditional paid TV service.

Although they have the right to report the numbers like this, it is clearly an effort to hide how many people are ditching traditional paid TV services in favor of streaming options. However, it is clear that cord cutting is making an impact on cable TV providers—from the new services they are offering to how often you hear them talk about cord cutting—it’s making a real impact.

This move highlights how hard it is to figure out how many people are cord cutters or cord nevers. Many agree the number is somewhere between 10 million and 20 million with a few saying it is as low as 5 million. Part of the real issue is the cord nevers who have never paid for traditional cable TV.
