By the End of 2018 Most Locals Will Be Streaming on a Live TV Service (Looking Back at Old Predictions)

In late 2017, I made a prediction that most ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC locals will be streaming on one or more live TV service by the end of 2018. Now that does not mean each service will have all locals, but one or more of the services will offer the channels.

Many people thought that prediction was slightly crazy and overly aggressive, but as October 2018 ends we are getting closer to it becoming a reality. Hulu has over 700 live locals. Now the fight is for second place as Hulu, YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue, DIRECTV NOW, and fuboTV are rapidly adding more locals almost weekly.

One of the main holds has been Nexstar Media Group. Their CEO said late in 2018 they are working on deals to address that issue. “Nexstar now has reached mutually satisfactory agreements with three of the big four networks for participation in OTT services,” said CEO Perry Sook in a statement.

Sook went on to say, “We are of a mind that we will have agreements with all the networks by year-end and all of the participating OTT services by year-end, and we’ll see what it ultimately amounts to.”

Now some Nexstar media stations are streaming on different live TV services. Hopefully, more will be soon. With two months left, will we hit that prediction? If not, it looks like we will be close to having 100% of the big four locals streaming online.
