Blockbuster’s Website is Returning From The Dead

Blockbuster, once the number one place to get a movie to watch, is now done to just one location that just won’t die. Now it seems like DISH may be up to something with Blockbuster once again.

Recently DISH, the parent company behind Blockbuster, updated the Blockbuster website with a new message that just says “we are working on rewinding your movie.”

This is the first update to the Blockbuster website in almost ten years, but Blockbuster’s social media has been alive and well recently. Over the last few years, the Blockbuster Twitter account has been busy with fun tweets making fun of themselves and the failure of their company.

Most of the social media action seemed to be an effort to promote the now-also failed Blockbuster show on Netflix. So why is DISH now pushing BLockbuster again and updating the Blockbuster website? Many have speculated that DISH may be bringing back a Blockbuster streaming service.

In the later 2000s and early 2010s, DISH had a Blockbuster streaming service that offered movies and TV shows for rent and sale. Now it is very possible that Blockbuster may be coming back as a streaming service.

Recently DISH launched a free ad-supported streaming service called Sling Freestream. This service is an effort to push Sling TV and allows you to use Sling TV’s app without even handing over a credit card. So it seems unlikely that DISH would want a Blockbuster streaming service competing with Sling TV’s free streaming service.

For now, we will have to wait and see what DISH is up to, but it is very possible DISH is hoping to capitalize and the nostalgic love of BLockbuster’s simpler times that has been growing over the last few years.
