AT&T’s New Streaming Service Will Rely Heavily on HBO Content

AT&T recently announced plans to launch an on-demand streaming service. According to AT&T, their new on-demand service will launch in the fourth quarter of 2019 and it will include three levels: a basic entry-level option that will offer movies, a premium service level with original HBO programming and “blockbuster movies,” and a final level that will include the first two plus additional content from WarnerMedia and other content providers.

This week AT&T’s Chief Randall Stephenson revealed more about the new on-demand service. According to Stephenson, the new AT&T on-demand service launching in late 2019 will focus heavily on HBO’s programs.

Now there will be other content from Turner properties, but it will rely heavily on HBO content. Other shows like Friends will show up on the new streaming service after their partnership with Netflix ends.

“We’re not going to have to spend another $11 billion to rival Netflix. We think we have enough IP and enough capability that we can put a product together that will be very attractive,” Stephenson said.

The question now is will people be willing to pay extra for programming owned by AT&T. Or will content from other companies on services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon be all that they need. We will have to wait and see what happens.
