AT&T Will Soon Own Over Nine Streaming Services Including Crunchyroll, DIRECTV NOW, & VRV

If you are trying to figure out AT&T’s streaming plans you may need a to start taking notes. Right now, AT&T has over nine streaming services live or launching soon. These services include Crunchyroll, VRV, FullScreen, Rooster Teeth, DIRECTV NOW, AT&T Watch TV, and HBO NOW. AT&T also owns 10% of Hulu.

To make things even more confusing AT&T is launching even more streaming services. These services include a streaming version of DIRECTV and an on-demand service built around HBO and Turner content.

What is even more confusing is the growing number of services that seem to overlap. Maybe the clearest example of this is AT&T Watch TV, DIRECTV NOW, and DIRECTV streaming. All three of these services offer or will soon offer live TV streaming. Other examples include VRV offering on-demand content from many Turner properties and the new on-demand service launching in late 2019.

So, what is AT&T doing with all these streaming services? Only AT&T knows for sure, but this seems to be a case of throw everything against the wall and see what sticks. (OK, I am sure AT&T has done a lot of additional research before launching these services.)

AT&T has been tight lipped about exactly how many of these services will work together. Yet it is possible AT&T plans to close some of them. Recently AT&T has shut down several streaming services including Filmstruck. It is possible that AT&T plans to shut down some services or merge them into new ones like their on-demand service that is said to have three different levels.

What is clear is that AT&T is dedicated to streaming, but exactly how is still unknown. AT&T is jumping into a crowded market of streaming services and making it even more crowded.

AT&T is not alone in launching new services. Other companies like T-Mobile are also launching new streaming services. The question now is how many of these will survive.

How AT&T plans to stand out is an important question they will need to answer. One company with several overlapping streaming services raises the question of why. Hopefully, AT&T will soon give us a better idea of how they plan to use their streaming services.
