AT&T Will Keep DirecTV Even With Dropping Subscriber Numbers

There has been talk of AT&T dropping DirecTV from its lineup after subscriber number have dropped dramatically. Now, John Stankey is saying that there is no plan for that to happen.

Last week,  The Wall Street Journal reported that AT&T is entertaining the possibility of selling its DIRECTV satellite service. According to the report, AT&T is “exploring parting ways with DIRECTV.” The story came after AT&T told investors to be prepared to lose over a million TV customers during the 3rd quarter of 2019.

The story is changing as CEO John Stankey shared more information with The Wall Street Journal.

“DirecTV is an important part of what we’re going to be doing going forward,” John Stankey, CEO of AT&T’s WarnerMedia division, said in his interview with Wall Street Journal this week. The report went on to say that Stankey “defended the company’s strategy in the media business and said it doesn’t plan to sell its DirecTV unit.”

“Although DirecTV has hemorrhaged subscribers as consumers cancel their TV service, Mr. Stankey said it would play a significant role when the company launches a subscription video-streaming product next year that brings together content from its WarnerMedia unit, which includes HBO and Warner Bros.,” WSJ reported.

We’ll now wait to see how DirecTV fits into the future of AT&T, including the role DirecTV will play in bringing subscribers to HBO Max.
