AT&T Will Bring High-Speed Fiber Optic Internet Service to This Midwest City

AT&T will soon begin building its AT&T Fiber network in Sevastopol, Wisconsin, as part of a $7.4 million project to bring high-speed internet to more remote areas.

Sevastopol and AT&T partnered for this fiber expansion project, which was approved in January. It aims to expand AT&T’s Fiber network to more than 2,000 local customers. The first leg of this endeavor – planning and engineering work – will start in the first quarter of 2024. The project is expected to finish within two years, though residents will get access as work is completed in their area.

This project is part of several public-private collaborations AT&T is launching across the U.S. to help close the digital divide. While some communities receive government grants to roll out internet or upgrade infrastructure, AT&T works with community boards to bring towns up to speed. The company covers millions in costs, assuming a large chunk of the financial burden faced by small towns. In exchange, they’ll gain a steady revenue stream once the fiber is laid out and customers get service.

Sevastopol is in Door County, an area with less than 60% of addresses connected to the internet or seeing speeds faster than 100/20 Mbps. AT&T has already deployed its fiber network to 370,000 locations in Wisconsin. From 2020 through 2022, the company has invested $900 million to expand its wireless and wireline networks in the state, which now has more than 1.2 million miles of fiber optics.

“In today’s digital age, fast connectivity is crucial to everyday life,” said Dan Woelfel, Sevastopol’s Town Chair. “Bringing AT&T Fiber to Sevastopol is a great step forward in continuing to improve the quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors in our community.

AT&T has been working to replace its older copper-based DSL lines with fiber, which offers far higher speeds at lower costs. Sevastopol will see speeds starting at 300 Mbps for uploads and downloads. Some plans will offer internet up to 5 Gig. Residents will get more bandwidth so that they can use multiple devices at the same time.

Check here to see if AT&T Fiber is available in your area yet. Plans start at $35 a month for 300 Mbps with an eligible AT&T Wireless plan or $55 a month without.
