AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile Add 932,000 5G Home Internet Customers in Just 3 Months as Comcast & Spectrum Feel The Cord-Cutting 2.0 Pain

In a seismic shift for the U.S. telecommunications AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile collectively added 932,000 5G Home Internet subscribers in the second quarter of 2025, capitalizing on the growing trend of “Cord-Cutting 2.0.” This surge underscores the increasing consumer preference for wireless broadband alternatives, driven by affordability, flexibility, and the rapid expansion of 5G networks. Meanwhile, traditional cable giants Comcast and Charter Communications’ Spectrum are bracing for their Q2 earnings reports next week, following a challenging first quarter where they lost a combined 259,000 internet subscribers.

The robust growth in 5G Home Internet reflects a broader movement away from traditional cable broadband, as consumers seek cost-effective and reliable options. T-Mobile led the charge, adding approximately 450,000 5G Home Internet customers, bolstered by its aggressive network expansion and competitive pricing. Verizon followed closely, reporting 293,000 broadband net additions, including its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service, which now serves over 5 million subscribers. AT&T contributed significantly with 203,000 AT&T Internet Air additions, alongside 243,000 fiber net adds, highlighting its dual strategy in wireless and fiber connectivity.

This growth comes as Comcast and Spectrum face mounting pressure from subscriber churn. In Q1 2025, Comcast reported a loss of 199,000 broadband customers, while Spectrum shed 60,000, totaling 259,000 cancellations. Analysts attribute these losses to rising prices, consumer dissatisfaction, and the discontinuation of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) in February 2024, which impacted low-income households. The rise of 5G Home Internet, alongside expanding fiber networks and satellite options like Starlink, has intensified competition, eroding the once-dominant market share of cable providers.

As Cord-Cutting 2.0 gains momentum, the telecommunications landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. With Comcast and Spectrum’s earnings reports looming, all eyes will be on how these cable giants respond to the accelerating shift toward wireless and fiber alternatives.
