AT&T Plans to Use DIRECTV & DIRECTV NOW As a Distribution Channel for Warner Media Content

With the downturn in DIRECTV subscribers, many have wondered if AT&T regretted buying DIRECTV. Yesterday, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson opened up about the DIRECTV purchase on Mornings with Maria on the Fox Business Network.

“DirecTV was the platform on which we have made all these other investment decisions,” Randall Stephenson said. He went on to say, “DirecTV gave us the ability to do that immediately and then it also gives us a really large distribution channel now for all this Warner Media content…”

AT&T has most noticeably used their DIRECTV purchase to launch DIRECTV NOW. AT&T also used their deals to bring content to channels to AT&T Watch TV, a service targeting customers who have AT&T’s Unlimited & More wireless service.

But what does AT&T plan to take from Warner Media and bring to DIRECTV NOW? AT&T has a huge library of movies and TV shows at their fingertips. We already know they plan to launch a Hulu-like on-demand service, but it sounds like they also plan to bring some of this content to DIRECTV NOW and DIRECTV.

We will have to wait and see what happens. Recently AT&T has been moving very slowly adding new features to DIRECTV NOW. For over a year a DVR add-on to expand DVR storage has been announced for DIRECTV NOW but has yet to come out. Hopefully this Warner Media content comes to DIRECTV NOW faster than the DIRECTV NOW DVR add-on.
