AT&T Opens Up About the Rough DIRECTV NOW Launch & How It Got Caught “Flat-Footed”

AT&T’s top techs recently opened up about the launch and what went wrong.

Last week at the Jeffries 2017 Technology Conference in Miami, Bill Hogg, president of technology and operations for AT&T, spoke to the crowd about DIRECTV NOW.

“It ramped up a lot faster than we ever thought it would, which is a great thing but also caught us a bit flat-footed on a couple things,” said Bill Hogg according to The Dallas Business Journal.

“Our teams have been working through capacity, have been working through authentication issues, streaming issues,” added Hogg. “What we’re seeing is the error rates are declining pretty fast and that the platform is stabilizing.”

200,000 subscribers in just a few months is an impressive first launch. According to reports, after about two years PlayStation Vue only recently hit 400,000 subscribers something DIRECTV NOW has already hit in just about six months.

AT&T has greatly improved the service, but it still faces several major issues. DIRECTV NOW has promised several major improvements to the service are in the works—from supporting Roku to a DVR that is to come at some point in 2017.

For now we will wait and see what DIRECTV NOW does next.
