AT&T Makes it Harder to Cancel Home Internet & Phone

Earlier this month Spectrum made it harder to cancel home internet. Now AT&T is doing the same as it has started to notify customers that they are changing their cancellation policy for internet customers. In the past if you canceled mid-month and did not have a contract you could get a refund for the rest of the month you did not use. Now AT&T is no longer offering pro rata (aka prorated) credits for unused services when you canceled.

This means if you cancel in the first week of your new bill AT&T gets to keep your full payment even if you only used a few days.

Here is the notice being sent to AT&T internet customers:

Please read this if you receive AT&T Internet and/or AT&T Phone service(s). We want to remind you that you’re billed in advance for recurring service(s) and applicable fees based on the terms of your current service agreement(s) with us. Starting Jul‌y 15, 20‌19, subject to applicable laws, your recurring service(s) and fees won’t be prorated if you cancel the above service(s) on any day other than the last day of your billing cycle. For products not listed above, refer to their terms of service for more information.

So if you plan to cancel AT&T home internet make sure you do so right before, not right after, your next bill starting in July 2019.

It seems that companies like AT&T and Spectrum are getting ready for a flood of people to leave for services like 5G home internet. By changing the rules they can keep even more money as Americans start to look for new internet services.
